October 2002:

Exclusive Updated Interview with

KIERAN MAHON

foxholski: If you were doing a later with Jools Holland appearance, what would be your fantasy line up playing on the same show with you?

Kieran: Ideally it would open with Godspeed you black emperor! Then Deus, Bjork and finish with either Massive Attack or Pink Floyd, preferrably both.

foxholski: What are your respective opinions about the Evening Session's demise?

Kieran: Its definitely a shame. We grew up listening to the show and it was a main way of discovering new bands. As long as Radio 1 can replace it with something decent theres still hope but if they can't its unhealthy for music in general.

foxholski: How is the studio coming along? Will you hire it out to other bands for rehearsals/recording?

Kieran: The studio, in my opinion, is a work of art in itself. Picture this: wooden floors, perfectly painted colourful walls, artistically hung carpets, customised art work and some of the best recording equipment in the world. It will make sense to hire it out to other bands when we go on tour because we haven't paid back the dodgy loan shark yet and Didz parents will loose their house if we can't pay the loan back by the end of Easter.

foxholski: What do the cows appear to think of your rehearsals? Do they seem to be a better audience than the sheep?

Kieran: Both cows and sheep are disappointing audiences compared to pigs. The pigs used to squeal along in harmony but then they were slaughtered for food.

foxholski: The new material: are the lyrics taking a more personal/introspective or more social turn?

Kieran: This is a difficult question because we haven't tried putting lyrics onto any of the new stuff yet. It is further complicated by the fact that different people might contribute to lyrics. Exciting times.

foxholski: Name 3 adjectives to describe the sound of the new tracks you have been working on:

Kieran: Weird, positive, loud.

foxholski: The Bull and Gate gig seemed to be very emotionally charged - how was it? Would you ever consider doing intimate fanclub only gigs as a way of making sure the fans get in?

Kieran: We enjoyed the Bull and Gate gig a lot. Fisher and Ben being carried on about five people at the end was my highlight, Fisher still hasn't got over it. Its always rewarding to give something back to fans who have supported us so well. As for the intimate fanclub only gig well have to bare it in mind, we never rule things out, none of us thought we would be going back to the Bull and Gate earlier this year.

foxholski: Will the next tour definitely take in bigger venues than April? When are you touring?

Kieran: We will probably warm up in similar size venues to the last April tour but then hopefully move up to bigger ones, but that depends if we find any more people that like us. There are no confirmed dates for touring next year but we will let you know as soon as we know.

foxhoski: Marmite - good or evil?

Kieran: So good it could be used in war to help wounded patients feel better.

foxholski: If you could have written the music to any movie soundtrack which film would it be?

Kieran: Probably Blade Runner because the voices on some of our keyboards sound exactly like the future. Also we could have made it more scary with our patented voices from hell sounds.

foxholski: What/who has been inspiring you to write most recently?

Kieran: Our new studio, Coldplay, my car, Mogwai, Minuteman, Dan Austin, Beck.

foxholski: How is Ashridge Park FC doing?

Kieran: I think it is well. Ben and Didz shower together now so they are happy. Ben scored a goal too.

foxholski: What bands do you plan to see in the next few weeks?

Kieran: I would like to see Death in Vegas, if I havent already missed them and well probably be seeing some local bands in Reading if we can find the time.

foxholski: Nominate two people and two songs that you would like to have with you on the moon...

Kieran: My friends MC2 and Brooko. The songs would be: I want you (shes so heavy) by the Beatles and Djed by Tortoise.

foxholski: Do you think that idyllic happiness is a very evasive thing?

Kieran: Yes, if you werent sad what would make you appreciate happiness?

foxholski: This is Dolcie she is my cat. She likes Tom and Ben but has a crap name please can you rename her?

Kieran: How about Bentom (Immortal avenger of Mortality and Securer of Happiness)

foxholski: Who's was the best gig you have seen this year?

Kieran: Probably Coldplay at Glastonbury, absolutely breathtaking.

foxholski: What are you most a) dreading and b) looking forward to in the next few months? (..apart from us leaving)

Kieran: a) The stress of having have to finish songs by a certain date

b) The satisfaction of writing new songs.

foxholski: Finally: what three adjectives would you use to describe the way you feel right now?

Kieran: Lucky, hopeful and inneedofhaircut.
